    Mr. Verlon Darwin Toler, age 77, a resident of Washington, NC died Sunday November 18, 2018 at Vidant Beaufort Hospital in Washington after a lengthy illness.

    A graveside funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday November 21, 2018 at Pamlico Memorial Gardens officiated by Rev. Donnie Smith of Wesleyan Pentecostal Church. Lee Campbell, Robert Huffman, Jeffrey Toler, Reggie Toler, Rudy Toler and Wesley Martin will serve as pallbearers.

    The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday November 20, 2018 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.

    Mr. Toler was born in Beaufort County on January 6, 1941 son of the late Robert McKinley Toler, Sr. and the late Ola Louise Edwards Toler. He served in the U.S. Navy and was proud of his service to his country. On May 29, 1965 Mr. Toler married the former Lois Elizabeth Swanner who survives. He was an avid NASCAR fan, which the love of the sport, resulted in him becoming a skillful and competent mechanic. Mr. Toler was well known as a mechanic at Smith Mills Pontiac and Moore's Ford before working as a self-employed mechanic. He spent a big part of his life building and working on race cars which were driven by his son Virgil and his late grandson Chuck. Some say competition and oil ran thru his veins. Mr. Toler attended Wesleyan Pentecostal Church of Chocowinity.

    Surviving along with his wife Lois of the home are a son: Virgil Darwin Toler and his wife Adeanna of Washington; a daughter: Charlene Martin and her husband Wesley of Washington; three brothers: Reginald Toler and his wife Lynn, Rudy Toler and Danny Toler and his wife Gail all of Washington; two sisters: Jacqueline "Jackie" Carrington of Chocowinity and Linda Haddock and her husband Bobby of Washington; two grandsons: Lee Thomas Campbell and Logan Todd Vick; five step grandchildren: Ashlynn Martin, Wesley Martin, Jr., Samantha Basnight, Cassie Sawyer and David Olson and two step great grandchildren; Remi La 'Nae Basnight and Douglas Sawyer. Mr. Toler was predeceased along with his parents by an infant son: Verlon Darwin Toler, Jr.; two brothers: Robert Toler, Jr. and Gennell Toler and a grandson: Charlie Edward Godley, IV.

    In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks for memorial contributions be made to Wesleyan Pentecostal Church of Chocowinity, P.O. Box 459, Chocowinity, NC 27817.
