    Mr. John Richard Hamilton, age 71, a former resident of Elizabeth City and Winton, died Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Ridgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center in Washington, NC.

    A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Ridgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center, conducted by Dr. Melvin Styons and Ron Stuart.

    Mr. Hamilton was born in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on August 16, 1947. He was the son of the late Howard Fredrick Hamilton and Doris Myrtle Dexter Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton graduated from Stranahan High School in Ft. Lauderdale and attended Roanoke Bible College in Elizabeth City. He worked as Maintenance Supervisor for 20 years at Roanoke Bible College. While at Roanoke, Mr. Hamilton helped build Heritage Hall, Pearl Pressley Hall and Turner Hall. He also worked at Gordon Sheet Metal in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Public Schools, Sears in Elizabeth City and Franklin, VA. Jesse Owens Mechanical in Harbinger, N.C., and Ace Hardware in Ahoskie.

    Mr. Hamilton was a member of North Andrews Christian Church of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Bethlehem Church of Christ in Hertford, and was a charter and current member and former elder of South Mills Church of Christ in South Mills. He was a Den Leader with the Cub Scouts and Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Hamilton raised two strong Christian sons.

    On May 26, 1972, Mr. Hamilton married the former Donita Clair Allen, who survives.

    Surviving with his wife are two sons, Richard Allen Hamilton and wife Sarah of San Antonio, TX and Thomas Benjamin Hamilton and wife Suzanne of Washington; three grandsons, Josiah Hamilton, Camden Hamilton, Ewan Hamilton; two brothers, Paul Hamilton of Coral Springs, FL, Edward Hamilton of Charlotte, AR; one sister, Grace H. Stephenson of Hollywood, FL; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by a brother, James Hamilton and a sister, Margaret H. Eddy Neering.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mid-Atlantic Christian University, 715 North Poindexter Street, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909 or South Mills Church of Christ, 100 Culpepper Road, South Mills, N.C. 27976.
