Press Release:

Earlier this week, the Senate passed a joint resolution imploring Congress to ratify President Trump's United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The USMCA is the result of President Trump delivering on his promise to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). While NAFTA has resulted in a close relationship between the United States, Canada and Mexico that has proven economically and strategically important for all three countries, 25 years later, NAFTA no longer offers the protections needed for a modern economy.

President Trump's vision was to bring the trade agreement with our neighbors into the 21st century while protecting the interests of American workers and job creators and that is exactly what the USMCA does.

The USMCA will lead to increased wages for Americans, improved worker rights and better protection of intellectual property while creating more balanced, reciprocal trade that grows the North American economy.

President Trump and the leaders of Canada and Mexico all signed the agreement last November, but Nancy Pelosi continues to move the goalposts, refusing to allow it to come up for a vote in the U.S. House even after Mexico agreed to labor reforms that Democrats demanded as part of the deal.

Democrats in Congress are more concerned about the political optics of giving President Trump a "win" by ratifying USMCA that they are willing to put American workers, businesses and our economy at risk just to prove a point.

That is why my fellow Senators and I felt it was critical that we pass this resolution to send a strong message to Congress that we support President Trump's efforts to strengthen our important economic relationship with Canada and Mexico and implore them to put aside the political gamesmanship and do the same.
