Pelosi and Schiff Surrender to Trump on FISA Bill | Eastern North Carolina Now

    President Donald Trump notched another win in his ongoing struggle with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), and the rest of the House Democrats. After Trump issued a veto threat on Wednesday, Pelosi called off her attempt to ram the premature measure to the desk of the president. The bill would have reauthorized FISA courts in their present form, the kind of courts that authorized the illegal surveillance of the Trump campaign in 2016. This is a big win for the president.

    Democrats had already cancelled a FISA vote on Wednesday because of earlier objections from Trump. But Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) definitely pulled the bill Thursday morning when House Republicans would not support it. That would make the overriding president's veto impossible, given the two-thirds majority needed to overcome a presidential veto.

    "The President tweeted that he would veto the bill, and House Republicans abandoned their support for our national security," Pelosi whined after she was made to surrender to Trump and the GOP.

    The House instead voted 284-122 on Thursday to go to a conference committee with the Senate to work out a compromise. House members appointed to the committee are key Democrats and Republicans on the Judiciary and Intelligence Committees: Reps. Adam Schiff, Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Devin Nunes (R-CA), and Jim Jordan (R-OH).

    In a tweet on Tuesday, Trump asked Republicans in the House to vote against the bill. GOP House leaders worked against the measure as a result of the president's request, leaving Pelosi and House Democrats the options of trying to pass the measure by themselves or convening a conference committee. They backed down and went to conference.

    "If the FISA Bill is passed tonight on the House floor, I will quickly VETO it," Trump tweeted before the vote. "Our Country has just suffered through the greatest political crime in its history. The massive abuse of FISA was a big part of it!"

    Pelosi disagreed: "Clearly because House Republicans have prioritized politics over our national security, we will no longer have a bipartisan veto-proof majority. It will be our intention to go to conference in order to ensure that all of the views of all members of our caucus are represented in the final product."

    On Thursday, Trump thanked GOP House members for stopping the proposed FISA legislation, saying on Twitter, it "would just perpetuate the abuse that produced the Greatest Political Crime In the History of the U.S., the Russian Witch-Hunt."

    Pelosi and the House Democrats knew full well that the president would never sign the bill in its present form. How could he? That would be giving the stamp of approval to the process that held him, his office, and the country hostage for years to an unethical and corrupt system that targeted members of his team because they had the temerity to run against and beat the anointed candidate of the DC establishment: Hillary Clinton.

    The Democrats and Pelosi may now try to use the veto threat against him in the fall election, saying he made the threat to escape further scrutiny. But after the long and wasted hoax that FISA put into motion, the American public knows better than to accept Democrat talking points on this subject.
