December 7, 1941 — A Date That Will Live in Infamy | Eastern NC Now

The Japanese attack Pearl Harbor.

Many school children have been taught that World War II began on December 7, 1941.  Actually, in began on September 1, 1939 with Hitler's invasion of Poland.  We should be mindful of this as the world watches the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the provocations of the Chinese against Taiwan.  The question then becomes:  Are we headed into World War III or if Russia and/or China invade their neighbors will America stand by and let it happen?

Lord, bless us and save us.

A few of us are alive and can remember the Sunday that Pear Harbor was attacked. I was sitting in my Dad’s chair in my pajamas listening to “Jack Armstrong the all American boy” when the announcement came over the radio. I was six years old, but I remember it today just like I remember the day Kennedy was shot. Soon there was an Observation Post built in our front yard to spot airplanes. This had a telephone and was one of the few in about a ten-mile radius. Many of the men who left to fight gave that number as their home number. As a result, we would get death messages about our neighbors, and my mother would go and deliver them and sometimes set up with the family for the rest of the night. We were at war, and we were together.

"The Greatest Generation" and most of our students will never know the real story or what happened all over the world during this time. We were together. This was not a police action or a contrived conflict. We had been attacked and we were at war. Not many will ever read "The Gathering Storm" by Churchill or understand the Oil problem with Japan and the economic impact that was causing a lot of this unrest. Neither do they get the real story on the difference between Naxisim and Communism and the unsuccessful impact these systems have had on any Country or Civilization that has tried it. Pray that we do not have to face this kind of crisis again.
