On Thursday, Australia's Northern Territory chief minister Michael Gunner announced that unvaccinated people may not go to work or exercise outdoors over the next four days. In a public announcement, he began: "The fully vaccinated will continue as they were. For people who are not vaccinated, lockdown rules will apply to everyone 16 and above. If you are not fully vaxxed, stay home. You are at greater risk of catching COVID, becoming ill and needing hospital care."

"You may only leave home for three reasons: medical treatment, including COVID testing or vaccination," he pronounced, adding, "for essential groups and services, like groceries ... medications; to provide care and support to a family member or person who cannot support themselves. You cannot travel more than 30 kilometers from your home when leaving for one of those three reasons or the nearest practical destination. If you need to go to the hospital more than 30 kilometers from your home, that's okay."

"There are only three reasons to leave the home now, not five," he proclaimed. "Work is not a reason to leave the home for the unvaccinated; the chief health officer has also determined that restriction of movement is critical right now, and that one hour of exercise for the next four days is not essential. Remember, these restrictions only apply to those who are not fully vaccinated."

Gunner stated, "COVID is often an exponential problem. One positive case in the community usually sees more than one person affected," adding, "There has been plenty of time for people to get vaccinated, people who are not vaccinated present the greatest risk of spreading the virus and are the most at risk of becoming seriously ill if they get the virus," Sky News reported. Gunner also stated, "The fully vaccinated are free to continue to go about their lives as long as they comply with the territory-wide mask mandate."

Regarding the vaccination pass that has been imposed, Gunner stated the idea was "not radical," explaining, "We're doing this early as a sustainable measure that provides the best ability to control community transmission and who ends up in our hospitals." "The pass will be necessary to enter high-risk hospitality settings including pubs and clubs, casinos, restaurants, cinemas, ticketed events for over 500 people in urban centres and 100 for non-urban centres," Sky News explained. Gunner said. "Territorians love having a beer with their mates, and the overwhelming majority get to keep doing this. We want you to be as safe as possible while having a frothy or a feed."

The Northern Territory recorded 256 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

Last October Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) targeted Gunner, tweeting, "I love the Aussies. Their history of rugged independence is legendary; I've always said Australia is the Texas of the Pacific. The Covid tyranny of their current government is disgraceful & sad. Individual liberty matters. I stand with the people of #Australia.

Gunner, retweeted Cruz, then responded, "Nearly 70,000 Texans have tragically died from COVID. There have been zero deaths in the Territory. Did you know that? ... We've done whatever it takes to protect the Territory. ... That's kept us safe AND free. We have been in lock down for just eight days in 18 months. Our businesses and schools are all open. Did you know that? We don't need your lectures, thanks mate. You know nothing about us. And if you stand against a life-saving vaccine, then you sure as hell don't stand with Australia. I love Texas (go Longhorns), but when it comes to COVID, I'm glad we're nothing like you."
