A man suspected of killing two people during a Memorial Day weekend shooting spree in 2006 has been arrested in Mexico.

The 48-year-old man, whom The Daily Wire won't name due to its policy on mass shooters, has been on the run since that fateful day 16 years ago, NBC News reported. The alleged shooter reportedly argued with his estranged wife at the time after he showed up at a holiday picnic on Lake Michigan, demanding to see their 3-year-old daughter. There were reportedly hundreds of other people and families at the lake that day. The couple were reportedly in the final stages of a divorce. His wife demanded he leave, after which he allegedly pulled out a handgun and demanded five partygoers get down on their knees before shooting them "execution-style" before they could even follow his demands, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He shot his wife twice in the chest, but she survived. Four other people were shot, two of whom died due to their injuries.

In a press release, the FBI noted that the man was added to the bureau's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list on September 8, 2021, though an arrest warrant was issued for him on June 1, 2006, in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. He was charged with first-degree homicide and first-degree attempted homicide. He allegedly fled and a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was added to his list of charges the following day.

He was finally captured in Zapopan, Guadalajara, Mexico on February 3, 2022. The Journal Sentinel reported that it was a tip that led the FBI to finally capturing the suspect. When he was added to the Most Wanted list, a reward of $100,000 was offered for his capture.

The suspected shooter "spent the last 16 years running from law enforcement, hiding in another country, and believing time and distance was on his side," Special Agent in Charge Michael Hensle of the FBI's Milwaukee Field Office said in the press release. "The FBI has a long reach and extraordinary law enforcement partnerships across the globe. I commend the tireless efforts of all our partners from Milwaukee to Mexico in closely coordinating with the FBI in capturing this wanted fugitive and helping to bring this violent offender to justice, as well as closure to the victims and their families."

"The Milwaukee Police Department appreciates all of the efforts by the FBI and assisting law enforcement agencies involved in the apprehension. ... With his capture, we are one step closer to bringing justice and closure to the victims, the victims' families and everyone that was impacted by this tragic incident. I am committed to working with our community and system partners to build sustainable neighborhoods free of crime that are built on positive relationships," Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman added.

The FBI noted that he "was the 525th person to be placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, which was established in 1950."
