Mr. John Lee Cherry, Sr., age 79, a resident of Goose Creek Road, Washington died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at his home.

    Mr. John Lee Cherry, Sr., age 79, a resident of Goose Creek Road, Washington died Saturday, May 14, 2022, at his home.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.

    Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Old Ford Church of Christ, 6040 U.S. Highway 17 North, Washington, conducted by Reggie Braziel. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington.

    The following will serve as pallbearers: Josh Powell, Matthew Smith, John Lee "Trae" Cherry III, Bobby Clark, Bobby Cherry and Tony Smith.

    Mr. Cherry was born in Beaufort County on May 23, 1943. He was the son of the late Evan Bryant Cherry and Annie Ree Jackson Cherry. Mr. Cherry graduated from Washington High School in 1961. He served in the National Guard. Mr. Cherry was past co-owner of Charcoal Services in Bath. He later managed Camfil Farr in Washington. Mr. Cherry was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Washington Yacht and Country Club, Committee of 100, and Cypress Landing Golf Club. He was a member of Old Ford Church of Christ.

    On December 27, 1963, Mr. Cherry married Donna Dae Topping, who survives.

    Surviving with his wife are his son, John "Lee" Cherry, Jr. of Washington; three grandchildren, Brandy Cherry Powell (Joshua) of Chocowinity, John Lee "Trae" Cherry, Jr. (Jessica) of Chocowinity, Loren Weslee Cherry of Washington; two great grandchildren, Anna Lee Powell, Scarlett Marie Cherry; siblings, Viola Hamman of Washington; Bobby Cherry of Washington, Betty Sue Jensen of Washington, Donald Wayne Cherry of Pinetown and sister in law, Ann Cherry of Washington.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. Cherry was preceded in death by two brothers, Alton Cherry and Wesley Cherry and daughter in law, Neva Pridgen Cherry.

    The family would like to give a Thank You to Dr. Karen Kuchera and the Hospice nurses who helped him transition. Special Thank You to Teresa Braddy, Laura Powell, and Karen Williams.
