Beaufort County Arts Council Announces Upcoming Events
News Release:
Greetings!
There is a lot coming up at BCAC and we are sure we have something that will appeal to everyone.
On March 2nd, we will be presenting two events at once, but each has its own audience.
First, the 10th Annual MUSIC ACROSS THE SOUND will take place in Hyde County at Mattamuskeet School beginning at 7:00pm. This concert was first presented in 2003 as a response to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Isabel in an effort to "cheer up" that community. Ten years later, it has become a tradition that has grown in popularity and attendance. If you've never been to a MATS concert, make plans to attend this year. See the poster below for more information.
Second, BCAC will present the inaugural Pamlico Writers' Conference at the Washington Civic Center. This day long event will include a panel discussion, workshops in the morning and afternoon, keynote speaker Bland Simpson, and lunch - all for just $45. Registration deadline has been extended to February 22, and a complete conference schedule cam be found here. (By the way, if you would like to volunteer a couple of hours on the day of the conference, we could use your help in a variety of ways. Give us a call!)
On March 10, the Eastern Youth Orchestra will perform at the Washington Civic Center beginning at 3:00pm. Actually, the concert will consist of three different orchestras showcasing the musical talents of students from ten counties in eastern NC. Directed by music faculty from ECU, this is BCAC's seventh year of presenting this wonderful concert. Part of our HeART of the City Concert Series, the concert is presented with support from the City of Washington.
This year's artists-in-the-schools program will offer something for the public as well. MIke Wiley's powerful documentary theater production of THE PARCHMAN HOUR will be presented at the Washington High School Performing Arts Center on March 14 beginning at 7:30pm. The show is free and all are welcome. Telling the story of the freedom riders during the Civil Rights Era, the show uses regular theater techniques as well as music, film, and movement. Two education performances will take place during the day for high school students from Beaufort, Washington, and Hyde counties. See the poster below for more information.
We would be remiss if we didn't mention the ongoing Irene Glover Forbes Retrospective Exhibit that will run through March 14. If you haven't seen this wonderful exhibit of one of Beaufort County's best known artists, make plans to view the work as soon as possible. The Washington Civic Center gallery is open Tues-Fri from 9am-4pm, but you are encouraged to call first to verify gallery hours in case the building is being used for a private function.
Our 4th Annual Little Art Exhibit Fundraiser is March 19-21. In previous years, all artwork has sold out, but as we write this we still have some available. Works are on 8" X 11" canvases, and can be purchased individually for $30 each or four for $100. You will see which art is yours at the closing reception on March 21 at the Washington Civic Center. Everything you need to know can be found by clicking here. Call us today to purchase your piece of little art.
Whew! And that only takes us through March.
Call the arts council for more information about these and other arts events taking place throughout Beaufort County.
Sincerely,
Joey Toler, Executive Director BCAC
