As Europe trends to populist right, Austria is latest example
The Daily Mail of London recently analyzed a growing political trend across Europe to the populist right, and a recent poll in Austria is the latest manafestation of that trend. The right is surging across Europe in reaction to illegal immigration and an increasingly expensive green agenda.
Like many countries in Europe, Austria is seeing its populist / nationalist anti-immigration right, the Freedom Party surge in the polls. While the FPO has been in first place in the polls for months and making stellar gains in local elections, they are now nine points ahead nationally of their nearest competitor, which is the governing traditional conservative Austrian Peoples Party.
The latest poll has the Freedom Party at 32%, and the Austrian Peoples Party at 23%. Next is the center-left Social Democrats at 22% and the far-left Greens at 9%. That would give the Freedom Party almost twice the number of votes it received in the 2019 election, mostly at the expense of the Peoples Party.
The Freedom Party began its rise as the only party that fought hard against the Covid lockdowns and mandates, and has also been helped by its strong anti-immigration stand and its opposition to the green agenda.

Freedom and democracy are under major attack in the EU, particularly freedom of speech. It is good that freedom oriented parties of the populist right are gaining ground to stop the EU from becoming the EUSSR or the Fourth Reich. Restoring national sovereignty and eliminating the EU nanny state would be a huge blow against tyranny.

The Nazis were bad and it is good they were destroyed, and another totalitarian movement that started in Europe that killed and oppressed even more people, communism, is still a threat today. Also, in the current climate the green totalitarianism whose figurehead is Greta Thunberg, is a huge threat to freedom and democracy. But on balance, many good political ideas have come out of Europe, including many political thinkers behind concepts of freedom and democracy. The current trend in Europe is a good example of that. |

Many political movements, both good an bad, begin in Europe and find their way to the United States. Hopefully this conservative movement will find its way here in 2024.

Austria, like much of western Europe has a huge problem with the fake "asylum seekers" and that is driving voters to the right across much of Europe. Austria had a great staunchly conservative young Chancellor who was very strong against illegal immigration, but the Green Party pulled the same sort of crap on him that the Democrats are trying to pull on Trump and he left politics in disgust. Since then, his successor has talked a good game on immigration but not really delivered. Voters see the Freedom Party as a party that will deliver on immigration issues, like the Alternative fur Deutschland in Germany. Illegal immigration is a dagger pointed at the heart of western civilizatin on both sides of the Atlantic.
