    Mrs. Etta Carowan Buckman of Washington, North Carolina, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, December 23, 2023. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.

    The funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in the Sanctuary of the First Methodist Church Washington, officiated by Reverend Stephen Bazan. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery following the service. James F. Buckman, Winfield Mayne, Dennis Alfred Nichols, Charles M. Phillips, Dr. William J. Sherwood, and William F. Taylor will serve as pallbearers.

    Mrs. Buckman was born August 28, 1927. She attended East Carolina Teachers College and Hardbarger Business School in Raleigh, North Carolina.

    On a blind date set up by her oldest brother and her husband's cousin, she met and later married Edmund Tayloe Buckman, Jr. ("Eddie Buck"). They had two children, Josephine Buckman Vause and Edmund Tayloe Buckman, III.

    Mrs. Buckman is survived by her daughter Josephine Buckman Vause (Bobby), and her son Edmund Tayloe "Buck" Buckman, III (Vickie), her grandchildren, Lee Carmi Winters, Jr., Mary McLemore Capener (Cape), Etta Elizabeth Buckman (Robert), Edmund Tayloe Buckman IV (Virginia) and also her surviving great grandchildren, Robert Heaton Capener, Eleanor Etta Capener (Elle), Sarah Ellis Winters (Sallie), Robert Edgar Long IV (Bobby), Georgetta West Long, and Virginia Catherine Buckman. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Mrs. Buckman was predeceased by her husband, Edmund Tayloe Buckman, Jr., her parents, Clarence Bennett Carowan and Gladys Judkins Carowan, three brothers, Clarence, Glenn, and Adrian Carowan, and one sister, Zalia Carowan Fowler, and her in-laws, Josephine and Edmund Buckman.

    Etta Buckman was a very active member of the First Methodist Church Washington. She served in different leadership roles throughout the years. She was a member of the Reviewers Book Club.

    Etta and Eddie Buck enjoyed many years of traveling, golfing, and enjoying the Pamlico River with their family. Etta was well known for sharing homemade fudge for lots of occasions both happy and sad. She also enjoyed playing bridge her whole life up until the last few years. Foremost, she loved her family and she will always be remembered for her love, strength, and encouragement.

    Love and appreciation go to her long-time caregiver, Florence Lodge, and dedicated caregivers, Delena Branch, Sylvia Guilford, Vernice Hawkins, JoAnn Foreman, Malika Foreman, and Lena Bailey.
