District 3 Receives Nearly $1.2 million in Resiliency Grants | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Raleigh, N.C.     The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Coastal Management announced nearly $6 million in Resilient Coastal Communities Program (RCCP) grants, with nearly $1.2 million of that going to support communities in District 3.

    The RCCP supports communities in developing and implementing locally driven resilience strategies, including projects or activities that reduce the impacts of hazards like flooding and storms. The initiative helps local governments overcome barriers to coastal resilience and adaptation planning, boost local government capacity, and support a proactive, sustainable and fair approach to planning and project implementation.

    The following projects in District 3 received RCCP awards:

• Beaufort County (Town of Bath and unincorporated communities of Whitepost, Bayview, Pamlico Beach, Yeatsville, and Winsteadville) -- $85,000 for the Beaufort County Resilience Strategy
• Beaufort County - $304,500 for the Essential Services Resilience Projects
• Belhaven -- $123,050 for the Floodplain & Storm Water Ordinance Update
• New Bern -- $367,500 for the Duffyfield Canal Restoration Master Plan
• Washington Park -- $393,750 for the Stormwater Action Plan

    "Communities across my district have seen the devastating consequences of flooding, especially after Hurricane Florence," Sen. Bob Brinson (R-Craven) said. "These projects are vital for the future of District 3. By taking proactive steps now, we'll be in a better position to withstand and recover from future storms."

    With the latest round of funding, the RCCP has awarded approximately $16 million through 108 grants to 56 coastal communities to help increase their resilience to weather hazards. The RCCP receives funding through a combination of state and federal sources.
