Cautions holiday travelers and people to drive safe this season

Raleigh, NC     Governor McCrory has proclaimed Sunday, December 1, as "Drive Safer Sunday" in North Carolina. The Sunday after the Thanksgiving holiday is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year. Governor McCrory joins the Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety in cautioning North Carolinians to drive safe on Sunday and throughout the holiday season.

"As people are traveling to every region of our beautiful state, drivers should heighten their sense of awareness for inclement weather, heavier traffic and other potential dangers that may occur on the roadways to ensure everyone is safe and enjoys a happy holiday season," said Governor McCrory.

In 2012, 1,365 people died in crashes in North Carolina. Drivers can reduce the number of accidents on North Carolina roadways by eliminating distractions, maintaining safe speeds and driving defensively to avoid preventable accidents.

The Department of Transportation will be working to ensure smooth traffic patterns throughout the season and the Department of Public Safety will be providing supplemental resources to protect roadways. DPS has alerted citizens that they can report highway problems to the State Highway Patrol by simply dialing *HP (*47) on their cellular phones. The toll free call goes directly to the nearest Highway Patrol communication center.
