Doris Dunbar Hollis | Eastern NC Now

    Doris Dunbar Hollis, age 93, a resident of Chocowinity, NC passed away on September 27, 2026. Mrs. Hollis was born in Tyrrell County on October 7, 1932 to the late Leon N. Dunbar and Dora Cuthrell Dunbar. On November 1, 1952 she married the love of her life, Bonner Linwood Hollis, who preceded her in death in 2015 after 63 years of marriage.

    She is survived by her children, Gary Lynn Hollis (fiancée Gail Toler) and Debra Hollis Boyd (Billy) all of Washington, NC; and her grandchildren, Brandon Lynn Hollis of Holly Springs, NC and Justin Neal Boyd (Melissa) of Washington, NC; and one great-grandchild, Brock Boyd.

    Mrs. Hollis was a 1950 graduate of Bath High School. She was very dedicated to her family and possessed a strong work ethic throughout her adult life as a telephone operator at Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, as an inspector at Hamilton Beach, and was the assistant manager of Betsy Ross Clothing Store. She and her late husband were part-owners of D & H Supermarket in Chocowinity, NC for many years.

    Mrs. Hollis was an active member of Haw Branch Church of Christ until declining health limited her ability to attend. She loved the Lord and enjoyed her daily Bible readings. In her leisure time, she enjoyed camping, fishing, RV'ing across the United States, and working in her flower garden.

    In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, infant Leon Dunbar and Milford Dunbar; two sisters, Ruby Ensley and Betty Chandler; four brothers-in-law: Donald Hardy, John Jefferson, Jerry Ward, and Lou Ensley. Mrs. Hollis was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Tawny Hollis.

    Surviving in addition to her children and grandchildren are four sisters: Arlene Jones (Kenny) and Patricia Hardy of Chocowinity, Elsie Jefferson of Grimesland, and Joyce Ward of Washington; brother-in-law, Earl Chandler of Chocowinity; many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

    A graveside service will be held at Pamlico Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 2:15 pm with Jason Kirkman officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the graveside service at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Her nephews, Jerry Jefferson, Timmy Jefferson, Terry Ward, Tony Ward, Jeff Hardy, Brett Ingalls, Greg Purser, and Pooh Woolard will be serving as pallbearers. Family and friends will travel in procession to the cemetery from Paul Funeral Home & Crematory.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haw Branch Church of Christ, 1501 Haw Branch Road, Chocowinity, NC 27817.
