George Edward Cuthrell, age 87, a resident of Washington, NC, passed away Sunday October 4, 2026, at his home.

George was born July 14, 1939, in Belhaven, NC, to John Cuthrell and Mary Elizabeth Gaskins Cuthrell. He graduated from Pantego High School with the Class of 1958 and enjoyed attending many class reunions with his former classmates.

George married the love of his life, the former Luette Davenport, on May 29, 1960. Together, they shared 66 beautiful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, laughter, faith, and countless memories. Through all of life's seasons, George and Luette stood by one another with unwavering love, strength, and support. Their commitment to each other was a beautiful example of a lifelong partnership, and the love they shared will continue to live on through their family and all who knew them.

George was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ in Bath, NC, where he served in the Manna Ministry, providing food to those in need, and assisted with the Fellowship Ministry.

George was a true "jack of all trades" and was skilled at many things, both at home and on the job. Earlier in his career, he worked as a grain inspector and welder. He later worked for 32 years at Texas Gulf Sulfur/PCS Phosphate in Aurora, NC. He rode the Bayview Ferry throughout those years, making many friends and acquaintances along the way.

George loved the outdoors, especially deer hunting and fishing. He particularly enjoyed catfish fishing at Mattamuskeet Lake in Hyde County. He appreciated nature from the earth to the sky and found enjoyment in the simple things around him.

George was also known for his wonderful sense of humor. He loved playing number tricks on people and was affectionately known as the "Numbers Man" at work.

George is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Cuthrell; his in-laws, Julius and Elizabeth Davenport; his brothers, James Allen Cuthrell, Bobby Birch Cuthrell, and Floyd Shelton Cuthrell, Sr.; his sisters, Mildred Ann Cuthrell Young and Doris Aileen Cuthrell Stotesberry; and an infant son. He is survived by his only sibling, Pamela Faye Cuthrell Burbage of Pinetown.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Luette Davenport Cuthrell; his son, Samuel Edward Cuthrell (Emily Martin) of Wilmington, NC; his son, John Taylor Cuthrell and wife Ashley Harris of Washington, NC; his grandson, Daryn Taylor Cuthrell; and his granddaughter, Marley Nicole Cuthrell of Washington, NC.

A visitation will be held Wednesday October 7, 2026 at Athens Chapel Church of Christ, 35 Delia Wallace Road, Bath, NC, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at the church officiated by Chris Hux. A private committal service for family and close friends will be held at Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington, NC, following the service.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the teams at Gentiva Hospice and Cypress Coast Care for their compassionate care during George's final months, especially Victoria Hamilton, RN, and Jamie Hopkins. Special thanks to their granddaughter, Marley, for her love, care, and presence during this time.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his nephews, along with the Elders and Deacons of Athens Chapel Church of Christ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Athens Chapel Church of Christ Building Fund, 35 Delia Wallace Road, Bath, NC, or to Dementia Alliance of North Carolina, 9131 Anson Way, Suite 206, Raleigh, NC 27615.

Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington is honored to serve George's family.
