    Mr. Tan "Dalton" Elks, age 80, a resident of Hodges Road, Chocowinity, died Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

    Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, June 12, 2014 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington, conducted by Rev. Wiley Clark, Rev. Sonny Browne and Rev. James Dixon. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

    The following will serve as pallbearers: Watson Elks, Hank Elks, Eugene Elks, Phil Elks, Terry Gillikin and Chris Kiricoples. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Elks, Lloyd Taylor, Bill Sampson, Zeno Wright, Ricks Elks, Medford Elks and Wade Allen.

    Mr. Elks was born in Beaufort County on August 31, 1933. He was the son of the late James Stanley Elks and Ollie Mollis Elks. Mr. Elks graduated from Chocowinity High School and served as State President of Future Farmers of America. He was a retired partner in Gillko Inc. with his treasured friend Terry Gillikin. Mr. Elks was a founder of the Beaufort County Developmental Center and an honorary lifetime board member of BCDC. He attended Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and later Trinity Episcopal Church.

    Mr. Elks loved his family and was especially devoted to his son, Phil. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Mr. Elks loved woodworking, gardening and sharing the vegetables he raised with his neighbors. He was known for his joke telling. It made his day if one of his jokes made someone smile.

    On November 8, 1952, Mr. Elks married the former Shirley Dixon, who survives.

    Surviving with his wife are his children, James Phillip Elks (affectionately known as #1 Son) of the home, Sharon Elks Housley and husband, Douglas of Chocowinity, Gerald Dalton Elks and wife, Lori of Chocowinity and Donna Elks Pittman and husband, Allen of Washington; five grandchildren, Wayne Harris and Tania Harris both of Chocowinity, Emily Toler and Jacob Pittman both of Washington, Michael Goldberg of Chocowinity; one great grandchild, Katie Harris of Chocowinity; and one brother, Ralph Elks of Chocowinity.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. Elks was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Goldberg; a granddaughter, Kati Harris and 11 brothers and sisters.

    The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home, 1330 Hodges Road, Chocowinity.
