Cole L. Smith [UPDATED] | Eastern North Carolina Now

    Mr. Cole L. Smith, age 82, a resident of 616 College Avenue, Washington Park, died Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice House in Greenville.

    Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, August 16, 2014 in Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church in Washington, conducted by Rev. Danny Allen and Rev. Chris Leak. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens, Washington.

    The following will serve as active pallbearers: Tyler Alden Peacock, Jeffrey Alden Peacock, Joseph Robert Meshach, Eldridge N. Jordan, Leroy Jordan and Walter B. "Bubba" Gerard III. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter B. "Bo" Bowen, Jr., Dr. Marshall Taylor, Bruce Selden Taylor, Dr. John Inzerillo and Dr. Zack Waters.

    Mr. Smith was born in Lamar, S.C. on July 17, 1932. He was the son of the late Dudley Duncan Smith and Ella Watford Jordan Smith. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He worked in Power Operations for Dupont, retiring in the early 1980's. Mr. Smith was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Camden, S.C. After moving to Washington, he became a member of the First United Methodist Church.

    In his spare time, Mr. Smith enjoyed gardening and tinkering on lawn mowers. He never met a stranger. Mr. Smith was "best known for his positive outlook, despite everything". In May of 1956, he married the former Lois Victoria Outlaw, who survives.

    Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Dr. Brenda Smith Peacock and husband, Jeff of Washington, Cathy Smith Meshach and husband, Joe of Walterboro, S.C.; son, Cole L. Smith and wife, Donna of Cheraw, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Tyler Alden Peacock, Jennifer Grace Meshach, Bradley Alexander Smith and Jacob Ryan Smith.

    In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death a half-brother, Eldridge L. Jordan.

    The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, August 15, 2014 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington and other times at his home.
