News Release:

WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) announced he is co-sponsoring the Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act of 2015, authored by Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ), which enhances Congressional oversight of the Obama Administration's negotiations with Iran.

The bipartisan legislation requires the President to submit any nuclear agreement text or extension to Congress within five days if a deal is reached. If no deal is reached by June 30th, new sanctions would be imposed on Iran and previous sanctions that were waived by the Administration during negotiations would be restored.

"I am pleased to join a bipartisan group of Senators in supporting legislation to provide much-needed Congressional oversight of the Obama Administration's misguided negotiations with Iran," said Senator Tillis. "It is unfortunate that the Administration threw away any leverage it had by pre-emptively waiving economic sanctions against Iran and abandoning America's long-held position of preventing Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. The Iranian regime has repeatedly proven it cannot be trusted to simply drop its nuclear weapons ambitions, and Iranian forces and proxies have helped destroy civil society in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. Most importantly, Iran is the world's top state sponsor of terrorism and poses a direct threat to the safety and security of the United States, Israel, and our allies. The United States must do everything it can to prevent the ayatollahs from acquiring nuclear weapons."
