Facility Will Power Amazon Data Centers

Elizabeth City, N.C.     Governor Pat McCrory will join leaders from Iberdrola Renewables and Amazon tomorrow to break ground on North Carolina's first commercial-scale wind energy facility, Amazon Wind Farm U.S. East. Amazon is teaming with Iberdrola to construct and operate the wind facility on 22,000 acres of sparsely populated land in Perquimans and Pasquotank counties.

"The Amazon Wind Farm is a significant step toward diversifying North Carolina's energy resources," said Governor McCrory. "Bringing onshore wind production to North Carolina is part of my 'all of the above' energy strategy. By diversifying our energy resources, we can provide affordable, reliable, and secure sources of energy that are environmentally clean and safe."

The wind energy produced by the Amazon Wind Farm US East will be delivered to the electrical grid that powers cloud data centers for Amazon Web Services.

"This agreement, and those previously in place, puts AWS on track to surpass our goal of 40 percent renewable energy globally by the end of 2016," said Jerry Hunter, Vice President of Infrastructure at Amazon Web Services.

When completed, the capacity of the Amazon Wind Farm US East is expected to be 208 megawatts. Its annual output is expected to be 670,000 megawatt hours, or enough to power more than 61,000 homes for one year. The wind farm is scheduled to come on line in December 2016.

"Breaking ground on North Carolina's first wind farm is a perfect demonstration that getting to a competitive, clean energy future takes a team effort," said Frank Burkhartsmeyer, Iberdrola Renewables' U.S. Chief Executive Officer. "A wind farm of this scale and complexity wouldn't be possible without community support, Amazon Web Services, and Governor McCrory's leadership."
