Students cited as "BCCC's Best" for September

    Ten students at Beaufort County Community College were recognized as BCCC's Best in a ceremony on the college campus on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The students were recognized for the character trait "Committed" and were nominated by members of the faculty and staff.

    Those honored were Barbara Young, Joe Midgette, Laura Tate, Erica Modlin, Danisha Couther, Ashley Hendrickson, Marlen Gomez Avelar, Austin Nobles, Shakera Davis and Shellie Cahoon.

    During the ceremony attended by BCCC faculty and staff and guests of the honorees, Vice President of Student Services Rick Anderson and the nominating faculty or staff member presented each student with a certificate and outlined the reasons for the nomination.

    These 10 students have overcome a variety of personal obstacles and challenges, long commutes and longer hours, and remain committed to putting in quality work as they work toward achieving their academic goals.

    Each month, BCCC's Best highlights a character trait found in students such as motivation, respect, hard work, commitment and involvement in the college. The character trait for October is "Dependable"; nominations are due to Kimberly Jackson by Oct. 20.

Hispanic Parent's Night

    BCCC will host a Hispanic Parent's Night on Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 7-8 p.m. in the Building 10 Multipurpose Room. The purpose of this informational meeting is to provide parents of Hispanic students the opportunity to ask questions and get information about attending BCCC (presentation will be in Spanish). Spanish Instructor Jose Mendoza will conduct the session. Spanish versions of the Parent's Brochure will be provided, as well as information about our curriculum programs. Learning College Survey

    You should have received an email from Jay Sullivan with a survey regarding learning-centered practices at BCCC. Your input is needed, so please complete the survey by Oct. 9.

Alzheimer's Walk and Education Fair

    If you are interested in walking with BCCC's team on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon, please contact team captain Dana Sauls at 252-940-6391 or Dana.Sauls@BeaufortCCC.edu. You can also buy a T-shirt for $25 or a bracelet for $3, or simply donate in any amount — until the Sept. 30 deadline. Last year our team raised more than $500, and we would love to top that this time around.

Featured Artist

    BCCC Art Instructor Heea Crownfield's work will be on display in an exhibition at Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, N.C. from Oct. 24 to Dec. 4. For more information visit www.upstairsartspace.org.

SECU Foundation Scholarships

    BCCC students Misty Steward and Emily Alligood were selected for the State Employees Credit Union Foundation's People Helping People Scholarship, which provides $5,000 over four semesters to help pay for tuition, books, fees, course supplies and transportation. Both recipients are first-year students at BCCC. Steward is enrolled in the Business Administration program, and Alligood is pursuing an Associate in Science degree. BCCC Foundation

    The 22nd Annual BCCC Foundation Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015. Proceeds will provide emergency student grants. For more information or to register, contact Marcia Norwood at 252-940-6218 or Serena Sullivan at 252-940-6326.
