News Release:

Raleigh, N.C.     Here are four questions for the Democrat Party ahead of their afternoon press conference on attorney general's push for additional gun control measures in North Carolina:

  1. The attorney general specifically referred to banning gun sales to individuals on the Terrorism Watch List in his press release. Isn't the attorney general's gun control plan broader and doesn't it go further than President Obama's, which would only ban people on the shorter no-fly list?

    • Background: "Which Terror List Are Democrats Tying to Gun Control, Exactly?" (By John Bennett, "Which Terror List Are Democrats Tying to Gun Control, Exactly?" Roll Call, 12/8/2015)
    • Background: "The consolidated [Terrorism Watch List] database covers around 1.1 million people. The no-fly list includes many fewer people, around 47,000." (By John Bennett, "Which Terror List Are Democrats Tying to Gun Control, Exactly?" Roll Call, 12/8/2015)
    • Background: "Stop individuals on terror watchlist from getting guns in North Carolina, AG Cooper says" (NCDOJ Press Release, 12/7/2015)
    • Background: "In statement after statement since last Wednesday's attack in San Bernardino, Calif., Obama and his chief spokesman have referred to the federal no-fly list." (By John Bennett, "Which Terror List Are Democrats Tying to Gun Control, Exactly?" Roll Call, 12/8/2015)
  2. If you use the no-fly list or the Terrorism Watch List, doesn't that list effectively become a 'no-gun' list?
  3. Even the ACLU says the no-fly list should not be used to restrict gun sales. What would you do to ensure law-abiding citizens don't arbitrarily have their second amendment rights taken from them without due process by being placed on these lists?

    • Background: Journalists, entertainers, politicians and even homeland security officials have been placed on the Terrorism Watch List or no-fly list. http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/07/politics/no-fly-mistakes-cat-stevens-ted-kennedy-john-lewis/
    • Background: The ACLU has fought against the no-fly list for stripping citizens of due process. https://www.aclu.org/news/court-rules-no-fly-list-process-unconstitutional-and-must-be-reformed
    • Background: ACLU: "Until the No Fly List Is Fixed, It Shouldn't Be Used to Restrict People's Freedoms" (Blog: Hina Shamsi, "Until the No Fly List Is Fixed, It Shouldn't Be Used to Restrict People's Freedoms," ACLU.org, 12/7/2015)
    • Background: "While the criteria for adding individuals to the list remains murky, one thing is for sure: it's still a lot easier to get on the list than get off it. Even in clear cases of mistaken identity or clerical blundering, a name can linger in the system for years." (Gregory Krieg, "No-fly nightmares: The program's most embarrassing mistakes," CNN, 12/7/2015)
  4. Isn't this a broader effort to push for gun control coordinated by national Democrats like Nancy Pelosi?

    • Background: "Dems try to force vote on 'no-fly' list gun limits. The push is part of a larger messaging campaign the party will deploy this week." (Lauren French, "Dems try to force vote on 'no-fly' list gun limits," Politico, 12/7/2015)
