Jones Votes For Conscience Protection Act | Eastern North Carolina Now

    WASHINGTON, D.C.     Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) continued his long-standing fight for the pro-life cause by voting for S. 304, the Conscience Protection Act. The bill would enable health care providers to sue in federal court if they are discriminated against for not participating in an abortion procedure as a matter of conscience. According to current law, health care providers who are discriminated against for not participating in an abortion procedure as a matter of conscience can only file a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services. Often, those complaints go unheeded. The Conscience Protection Act passed 245 to 182 and will now go the Senate for consideration.

    "The taking of an innocent life is always wrong, and health care providers who don't want to participate in that as a matter of conscience should never be discriminated against in the workplace," said Congressman Jones. "This bill gives them a legal avenue to combat discrimination for choosing not to participate in an abortion procedure."
