Statement: NCGOP Responds to Rev. Barber's Efforts to Stoke Unrest | Eastern NC Now

Our thoughts are with the people of Charlotte and the police as they deal with a very difficult situation.

ENCNow
Press Release:

  • "Our thoughts are with the people of Charlotte and the police as they deal with a very difficult situation. Our only concern is the safety of our our citizens and our law officers.
  • All citizens should pray and support our police and National Guard tonight.
  • We are highly concerned that William Barbers demand for the police video to be released 'by nightfall' is as a threat to citizens in Charlotte. The statement appears to be encouraging violence, if Barber's unreasonable demands are not met.
  • Words matter and people hearing those statements from Barber, may conclude that violence is warranted if the video is not released to the public in the next few hours, perhaps before the family of the deceased has even seen the video.
  • Barber is attempting to undermine the legitimacy and authority of the Charlotte Police at a very dangerous time. We fully support our police, National Guard, firefighters, and other emergency personnel during this time.
  • Should Barber want to be helpful instead of acting with highly politically motives, he should encourage peaceful protests to be held in the full light of daytime, so police can concentrate their efforts on lawbreakers during the night.
  • Finally, Barber should ask why Mayor Roberts refused Gov. McCrory's offer of more law enforcement resources yesterday morning. This critical error saddens us all."
  • [Dallas Woodhouse, Executive Director, North Carolina Republican Party]
