In July the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published the Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings for over 3,500 hospitals nationwide. CMS developed a website "Hospital Compare" that provides information on how well hospitals provide care to their patients. Utilizing quarterly data reported to CMS by hospitals CMS developed a five star rating system.

The rating is based on quality measures that include: post-surgery infections, Emergency Department wait time, replacement surgery complications, hospital readmissions

Nationally only 100 Hospitals received a 5-Star rating which included four North Carolina Hospitals: Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC Specialty Hospital in Durham, Novant Health Medical Park Hospital in Winston-Salem and Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.

Carolina East Medical Center was the ONLY hospital East of I-95 to receive a 5-Star rating.
