Press Release:

October 6, 2018     Washington, NC: Second District Court Judicial Candidate Sarah Homes today called on her opponent Darrell Cayton to resign his seat on the bench for violations of the NC Code of Judicial Conduct. Ms. Homes cites specifically pages 8/9 of the Judicial Standards of the State of North Carolina memorandum dated 17 December 2015 under disqualifications issues. "A judge who is a candidate should disqualify himself/herself from hearing matters involving a campaign manager, treasurer and others who play a significant role in an opponent's campaign or in the judge's own campaign." In addition it states, "Where the size and timing of financial support to a judge creates a reasonable presumption of influence, a judge should disqualify from matters."

"Darrell Cayton is violating this directive by continuing to hear cases from Herman Gaskins who is acting in a direct capacity as his de facto campaign manager. This includes Gaskins putting up campaign signs, personally campaigning with Cayton and making public information requests for my personal employment record on behalf of the Darrell Cayton campaign. In addition he is continuing to hear cases litigated by the firm of Bramble and Bramble after Attorney Amanda Bramble made a $2500.00 campaign to Cayton on June 27, 2018."

Ms. Homes hereby requests of the Clerk of Courts in the respective counties of the Second Judicial District, in cooperation with the District Attorney, to immediately review those cases involving Herman Gaskins of Gaskins and Gaskins and John and Amanda Bramble of the Bramble Law Firm. This to include investigating rulings in their cases heard before Judge Darrell Cayton in both civil and criminal cases and specifically those involving DWIs.

"Darrell Cayton has violated not only the letter of the directive but also its intent to ensure there are no conflicts of interest between those who appear before him in court and those that are responsible within his campaign. This is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of blatant corruption that runs rampant through the courthouses of the Second Judicial District. This behavior renders Darrell Cayton unfit for office and he must step down immediately," Ms. Homes said.
