Governor Cooper Statement on Stalled Federal Disaster Relief Funding | Eastern NC Now

    RALEIGH: Governor Roy Cooper shared the following statement on stalled federal disaster relief funding legislation:

    "North Carolinians working to recover from disasters like Florence and Michael have been waiting too long for Washington to act," Gov. Cooper said. "I'm disappointed North Carolinians continue to wait for much-needed relief, and I urge the House to swiftly pass this legislation as soon as possible."

    Disaster relief funding passed by the Senate yesterday came at the urging of Gov. Cooper and other bipartisan leaders. Earlier this month, Gov. Cooper led an initiative to push Congress and President Trump to finalize federal relief for North Carolina and other states hit hard by natural disasters.

    To date, North Carolinians have received more than $1 billion in short-term disaster help from Stafford Act funding but nothing yet for long-term Florence recovery. Gov. Cooper has requested an additional $6.3 billion in relief, and late last year, Gov. Cooper established the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resiliency (NCORR) to help draw down and disburse aid to disaster-affected communities. Gov. Cooper's latest budget would also invest $1.5 million in statewide search and rescue teams and $250,000 in the North Carolina 2-1-1 system.
