What it will take to save America | Eastern North Carolina Now

Publisher's Note: This article originally appeared in the Beaufort Observer.

Sometimes, but not very often, we spotlight articles that we ask our readers to give special attention to. We usually ask you to forward a link to the article to people on your email list, tweet it on Twitter and post it on Facebook. When our readers do that as they have sometimes done, the number of people who see an article typically exceeds a quarter million over a month's time as a result of geometric progression.

We ask you to do so with this article. We feel very strongly that it is one of the most important articles we have ever posted and we feel strongly that not only is getting the truth out important, but getting people to actually DO SOMETHING about the issue is even more important.

Here's our point: Our nation was founded and became the greatest nation in the history of mankind based on Christian principles. We also believe that when our government began to denigrate religion in the public life of our nation that we began a downward spiral, in many ways.

Our Bonus Deal columnist, George Schryer, includes a signature on all of his emails that says:

If my people, Who are called by my Name, Will humble themselves And pray, And seek my face, and Turn from their Wicked ways, Then will I hear from Heaven And will forgive their Sin and will heal Their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14.

    We believe that very sincerely.

We also believe that a "perfect storm" has caused our nation to turn away from God, much to our peril. We see too much evidence that there is an organized campaign against religion in our nation. That, coupled with a morbid obsession with political correctness and a deliberate attempt on the part of our government to "de-religionize" our culture, and by assaults on traditional family values and yes--here it comes--a President that is more sensitive to Muslim concerns than Christians' concerns and rights--all of these trends have all joined like a Category 5 hurricane hitting at full moon high tide and stalling on top of us for years, not just hours.

Now if you don't believe our theory is correct then you must read David Barton's latest article on Wall Builders entitled "America's most biblically hostile president." In that article you will find a long lists of examples of Barack Obama's hostility toward religion in general and Christianity in particular, going back to 2008.

We'll just be blunt about this. Barack Obama must be defeated in November if this nation as we know it is to survive. This election, regardless of who the Republican nominee is, is just that important.

We believe the growth of acceptance of "multiculturalism" has essentially bastardized American culture. It has resulted in a decline in cultural values that made this the greatest culture to ever exist in terms of improving the standard of living of more people than has ever happened in world history. If nothing else, multiculturalism has sown the devastation that comes from relativism that extinguishes standards and replaces excellence with an acceptance of the unacceptable.

For example, the acceptance of bilingualism has imposed illiteracy on millions of people who would otherwise have been able to more fruitfully benefit from the most achievement oriented and therefore the most productive culture in existence. But while bilingualism condemns individuals to not being able to communicate in the economic system that they sacrificed to come here to enjoy, it at the same time diminishes that system for everyone, if for no other reason than the waste of human capital it creates. To not be able to communicate effectively in the language of commerce dooms one to marginalization. Yet multiculturalists compel the culture to accept marginalization.

The exact same thing happens when liberalism compels the acceptance of dependence at the expense of self-reliant achievement. It creates more moochers and fewer producers, thereby diminishing the individuals who miss what could have been while at the same time dragging the system down.

And, of course the destruction of the most productive institution man has ever created--the family, is now suffering and imposing suffering on an ever growing cadre of our population just as relativism has denigrated cultural morality.

Nowhere does relativism reveal its cruelty more than in the fact that the acceptance of "a woman's right to choose" has meant that over 50 million people who would otherwise have enjoyed the benefits of life not only lost that opportunity, but society lost their contributions. To illustrate that point, just consider this "what if": What if among those aborted "fetuses" was the discoverer of a cure for cancer?

And we would conclude on one final point. We believe that a part of the infection that political correctness has inflicted on our culture is that it has made spiritual wimps of many of our preachers, pastors, rabbis, priests and other religious leaders. Far too many ministers are too timid about standing up to oppose the assault on religion, and particularly Christianity, in this nation.

Much of the harm also resides in our judicial system. But that is the direct result of the kind of people presidents have appointed to the Federal judiciary, specifically the Supreme Court.

And that is the essence of what this presidential election is all about. The U. S. Supreme court is tittering on the brink. When Justice Kennedy retires, probably within the next four years, his replacement may well determine the outcome of this cultural battle.

Pray without ceasing that God will help our spiritual leaders to help turn this nation back to God. Nothing is more important or essential for our children and grandchildren.

    God bless America.
