Robert Euker Hawkins, 85, of Washington, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at The Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice House.

The eldest of two children born to Thomas Jackson and Edith Euker Hawkins, Robert was educated in the public schools of Winchester and Danville, Virginia. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University and Union Theological Seminary in Virginia.

Robert was ordained a deacon in the United Methodist Church in 1967 and an elder in 1971. Prior to that, he served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1958-1962. He enjoyed an illustrious career in the Virginia United Methodist Conference that spanned over three decades. Upon retirement, Robert began a second ministry in music. An accomplished flautist, he begin performing in churches in Virginia and North Carolina. His objective was to heighten worshippers' minds, hearts and spirits to the Presence of the Holy, and play classical flute (and, later, his recorder) within the confines of the worship experience.

In 2003, Robert relocated to Washington, North Carolina where he lived the rest of his life with his brother Fred. He particularly enjoyed performing with his jazz band aptly named "Friends." His rapport and friendship with local musicians was especially important to him, as was the church and congregation of Trinity Episcopal Church where he worshiped and performed regularly. Bob's last musical performance at Trinity was on October 6, his 85th birthday.

Robert is survived by his son, Thomas Hawkins, of Fishers, Indiana; his daughter, Lillian Stevens (Sam Stevens) of Williamsburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Erin Fryer (Randall Fryer), Sean Kelly, and Rachel Hawkins. He is also survived by a great-granddaughter, Parker Fryer, his brother Frederick F. Hawkins, two nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Chocowinity, North Carolina on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial gift to Trinity Episcopal Church, 182 NC-33, Chocowinity, NC 27817.

Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington is honored to serve the Hawkins family.
