Press Release:

Republican Candidate for Lieutenant Governor Greg Gebhardt was invited to speak today at a Voter ID rally in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Greg worked as a policy advisor in the North Carolina General Assembly in 2013 and helped to craft the original legislation.

On recent attempts to overturn Voter ID, Greg offered the following:

"The idea of Voter ID is not new in North Carolina. Back in 2013, the lawmakers and staff at the General Assembly spent months going through a deliberate process, gathering facts, and interviewing experts. Among other things, North Carolina modeled our legislation on language in other states across the South where the law had been upheld. We brought in the former Secretary of the State of Georgia and current Governor, Brian Kemp to offer his expertise on how the State of Georgia implemented their Voter ID laws and subsequently witnessed an increase in turnout among African-Americans. Further, other experts offered insight and how to design and implement legislation as to ensure that no voter was disenfranchised."

"This isn't about folks being denied from voting, it is about liberal, activist judges denying the will of 'We the People.' Currently, 35 states have a voter ID law on the books and in 2018, 82 of our 100 counties demanded Voter ID become a part of our constitution."

"Voter ID in North Carolina is about making sure that every individual who presents him or herself to vote are in fact who they say they are and that cumulatively, it is these votes-and ONLY these votes-that determine the outcome of our elections. We must continue to elect Republicans and appoint judges who obey the rule of law, respect our Constitutions, and support the will of the people."
