Mr. Stanley Paul "Mike" Sobol, age 74, of Chocowinity, NC died Friday, May 11, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

    Mr. Stanley Paul "Mike" Sobol, age 74, of Chocowinity, NC died Friday, May 11, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he was the third son of Damasus J. and Margaret Moran Sobol. He was educated at Boston Latin School and Tufts University, graduating with degrees in chemistry and biology. Mr. Sobol was for many years the Lab Director for the Drug Enforcement Administration's Special Testing and Research Laboratory in McLean, VA.

Mr. Sobol studied organ at the age of 13 under Samuel Walter at Boston University, and Gardner Evans of Church of Our Savior, Roslindale, MA. He also was organist and choir director at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, Roslindale, MA, Epiphany Episcopal Church in Walpole, MA, and interim organist at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Springfield, VA. He continued to be a substitute organist and choir director over the years. He was an avid golfer, Washington Redskins fan, and Sudoku puzzler.

    Mr. Sobol is survived by his wife, the former Frances C. Troy of Boston, MA; his daughter Joanne Phillippi, husband David, and grandson Brian of Roanoke, VA; son Allen F. Sobol and wife Catharine Smith of Goldsboro, NC; brother Thomas Sobol and wife Harriet of Scarsdale, NY; and brother Walter Sobol and wife Karen of Toledo, OH.

    A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Washington, NC on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM, with interment of his cremains in the chapel garden immediately following the service.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the organ fund at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, PO Box 985, Washington, NC 27889 or Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown St., Washington, NC 27889.
