Our Governor Is Simply Wrong About These Masks | Eastern North Carolina Now

There is a growing body of evidence that supports the conclusion that his lockdown and restrictions did not do what he intended.

The graphic to the right of a Tweet by Governor Roy Cooper shows just how warped he has become over this virus mess. He has issued illegal executive orders claiming they were based on "science." Yet he has produced no valid and reliable data to support that claim. In fact, there is a growing body of evidence that supports the conclusion that his lockdown and restrictions did not do what he intended. And that includes the face masks.

But we would contend that it is not a question of whether specific policies or measures work but rather who decides. If a person wants to wear a face mask, so be it. If they don't then anyone who fears those not doing so should avoid them. The point is that there is no Wizard behind the Curtain in Raleigh who knows all the answers...i.e. whether mask are effective. Regardless, unless someone can show that my failure to wear a mask is the proximate cause of you getting the virus then don't thread on me.

The real problem here, it seems to us, with Governor Cooper's thinking is that he has forgotten that he took an oath to support and defend the Constitutions and for what purpose he took that oath. It has always been meant as a promise to protect the liberty of our citizens from a tyrannical government and governor.

Admittedly, the Governor has a duty to take reasonable measures to protect the public health. But that does not mean to do anything he thinks is a great idea; but only that for which he has a compelling reason, supported by substantial solid evidence. He has the authority to quarantine sick people but not impose restrictions on people who are not sick, and it is his duty show which people are sick and assume everyone else is not sick.

Moreover, the premise of his Tweet is absurd. He demolishes his own argument when he claims the reason for wearing face masks is to "signify strength and compassion for others...and care about other people's health." Spare us. Frankly, we don't care whether the people at the grocery store care about our health or not. And it is not the government's role or duty to base public policy on affective emotional considerations! Again, if those people fear other people, we suggest they avoid them, but don't impose requirements and restrictions on us to assuage your fears or proclivities.

But above all else, the fundamental issue here is "who should make the decisions?" Cooper apparently believe he knows what is best for us. We contend that he is fundamentally wrong. Liberty means it is We The People who shall determine what is best for us. When he usurps those decision he robs us of our rightful rights.

In our lifetime we have never seen a stronger example of what is wrong with Democrats than this Governor. They don't respect the liberties and freedoms of our citizens. They think the "general welfare" trumps individual civil rights. In other words, Governor Cooper has perfectly demonstrated what a totalitarian ruler thinks he, like King George III, should be able to do...whatever HE thinks best. To hell with what the rest of us think.

Bless us and save us, from the Roy Cooper's of this world.
