Josephine Teenie Haddock | Eastern North Carolina Now

January 28, 1927 – March 27, 2021

Miss Josephine Clevenger Haddock, known affectionately as "Miss Teenie," said her farewell to this life in favor of the next on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Born on January 28, 1927, as the daughter of Grover and Alma Lilley, Miss Teenie grew up in and lived out her entire life in Washington, NC ("Little Washington" to those of us from Down East). During her working years, she spent the majority of her time (30 years) with Tayloe's Hospital Pharmacy. She attended the First Christian Church in Washington, NC, where she was a lifetime member.

Miss Teenie was kind and welcoming, and first-time meetings felt as though she had known you her entire life. She was straightforward and usually spoke her mind, then would add a little chuckle afterward. Miss Teenie enjoyed laughter. Being quick-witted and an excellent storyteller, she had a knack for punch-line delivery which she passed on to her son, Brent.

Miss Teenie adored her only child, Brent Clevenger of Charlotte, who she doted upon tirelessly throughout her life. Brent, being very fond of his mother, returned the favor in Teenie's later years. Brent would frequently visit, often introducing his mother to his circle of friends. Once introductions were complete, Miss Teenie always found a special place in peoples' hearts. Endearing and engaging from every first-time meeting, you couldn't help but fall in love with her integrity, honesty, and sense of humor. Through the years, she developed a large, extended family circle, many of whom were not blood relations. Miss Teenie loved to have a treat, and when Brent would come to see his mother, fun stories often developed around visits to Bill's Hot-Dog's, quick-runs to the local Krispy-Kreme, or an infamous furniture store purchase.

Miss Teenie also loved greeting cards, the giving and receiving of them. An uncle once said, in jest, that he thought she owned stock in Hallmark for all of the cards she sent and received. Brent would often gather cards from his circle of friends for mass-mailings to Miss Teenie. Every person she incorporated into her extended family could count on a card from her during the holidays and on their birthdays. Miss Teenie was amazingly thoughtful. We'll miss her laughter, her smiles, and the way she grabbed you and pulled you in for a hug when she saw you. Heaven now has a beautiful, new member, and we're certain the angels celebrated her arrival. Those of us who knew her will miss her presence in this world, until we are reunited on the other side. Farewell Miss Teenie, until we see you again.

Miss Teenie is survived by her son, Brent Clevenger and her sister, Jane Schauble of Ozark, Alabama, along with nieces and nephews and many, many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Christian Church, 307 E. Third Street, Washington, NC 27889. The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
