Swedish Prime Minister says no to migrant influx from Afghanistan | Eastern North Carolina Now

Sweden's Social Democrat Prime Minister has announced that his country will not be accepting any significant number of migrants from Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban takeover.  In 2015, his government accepted 160,000 Muslim migrants, the largest per capita intake in Europe.

This statement follows calls from the conservative governments of Greece and Austria for the EU to strengthen borders against an expected migrant wave.  Austria has called for the EU to set up deportation centers in nearby Muslim countries where Afghans can be deported to. That was joined by Italian populist / nationalist leader Senator Matteo Salvini, whose party tops the polls for next year's parliamentary election and whose 3 party coalition has a double digit lead over the center-left. Even Merkel's successor as leader of the German CDU has declared that "there can be no repeat of 2015" referring to the last migrant influx.

Some take the Swedish statement with a grain of salt because the same Prime Minister a month ago halted deportations to Afghanistan and released Afghans scheduled for deportation back into Sweden on bond.  Several European countries criticized that move at the time, saying it would encourage more Afghans to try to come to Europe.

The Social Democrats lost a vote of no confidence in parliament and only narrowly avoided a snap election a couple of months ago due to a quirk in Swedish election law.  They and their allies badly trail the coalition of conservative and populist parties in the polls for next year's election. 

Several European countries have recently deployed or reinforced existing army deployments to their borders to guard against illegal immigration.  Even Muslim Turkey has started building a border wall on its border with Iran to stop illegal immigration from Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan.
