On Tuesday, just before 1 p.m. a shooter allegedly injured multiple people at Oxford High School in a suburban area roughly 45 miles north of Detroit.

"A suspected shooter is in custody, according to Michael McCabe, undersheriff with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office," NBC News reported. "A handgun was also located, he said. ... McCabe said between four to six people have been injured."

"It wasn't immediately clear if the wounded were students," ABC News stated.

Later in the day, officials with the Oakland County Sheriff's department said that three students had been killed, and an additional six more people had been injured. One of those people injured was a teacher, according to officials.

The suspect, who used a semi-automatic handgun, was identified by officials as a 15-year-old sophomore.

"Deputies immediately responded and took the suspect into custody within five minutes of the original 911 call," Undersheriff Michael McCabe told reporters.

Oxford Community Schools announced, "All other district schools are in lockdown for safety purposes and are in no danger. Students at middle and elementary schools may be picked up by their parents at any time."

They also issued a statement saying, "This afternoon there was an active shooter at Oxford High School. Oakland County Sheriff's Department has secured the scene. Oxford High School students and staff are systematically being evacuated to the Meijer Garden Center and may be picked up there. Any students with their own transportation have been allowed to leave. All other district schools are in lockdown for safety purposes and are in no danger," Click On Detroit reported.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office stated, "We have one suspected shooter in custody along with a handgun. We do not believe there are any other at this time. There are multiple victims (4-6). No confirmed fatal shooting victims at this time."

Local 4 added, "All evacuated students will be located at the Meijer store for reunification with parents or relatives"

Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement on the shooting Tuesday evening saying, "My heart breaks for the students, teachers, staff, and families of Oxford High School. The death of multiple students and the shooting of many others, including a teacher, is horrific. I want to thank the first responders on the ground working hard to keep people safe as law enforcement officials investigate this shooting and get the community the help it needs right now."
