''independent'' redistricting commission caught in illegal act | Eastern NC Now

second state that had this happen this cycle

ENCNow

Only a few states have "independent redistricting commissions" but now a second one this cycle has been nailed for holding illegal secret meetings.  The latest scoflaw is Michigan's commission, following the very same problem in California.  Michigan's Supreme Court has ruled the commission's meeting illegal and required them to make public all documents, minutes, and recordings of their illegal closed door meeting.

Michigan's redistricting commission had previously come under fire for partisan Democrats sitting in seats designated for Independents.  The Michigan law allows prospective members to "self identify" whether they are Republican, Democrat, or Independent, and two people with extensive involvement with the Bernie Sanders wing of the Democrat Party self-identified as independents are were seated in slots reserved for independents.

These "independent" redistricting commissions seem more crooked and corrupt than legislators who do redistricting.

These so-called "independent" redistricting commissions have a track record of being more partisan than redistricting done by elected state legislatures. California gets worse partisan gerrymanders from the independent commissions than they ever did from the legislature. Ten years ago, it was a huge pro-Democrat gerrymander, and this year they are shoring up all the Democrat incumbents while gutting the districts of five GOP incumbents in Congress: www.breitbart.com
