Kiev holds firm as Ukrainians obliterate fearsome Chechen column | Eastern North Carolina Now

street to street fighting in Kharkiv, heavy Russian casualties

ENCNow

Putin thought he had a force that would strike terror into the Ukrainians, Muslim warriors and special forces from the Chechen region led by a Chechen general, Magomed Tushaev, one of Russia's most highly decorated officers.  He equipped them with 56 tanks and gave each Chechen soldier a deck of cards with a kill list photo on each card of a Ukrainian leader.  Now Tushaev and many of his soldiers are dead after his column was attacked and obliterated by Ukrainian forces.

Kiev is still holding firm, but there is now street by street fighting with heavy Russian casualties in the northern city of Kharkiv near the Russian border. Civilians with government issued AK-47s and homemade Molotov cocktails are helping defend their city. (UPDATE: latest reports say that the Russians have been expelled from the parts of the city they had entered).  A British cabinet minister says Putin's days are numbered if he fails.  Anti-war protests are spreading within Russia, even with FSB secret police arrests of thousands.  The Russian Defense Ministry admits that Russia has already lost 2,800 killed, a figure likely a couple of days old, and says Russia is prepared to lose 50,000, which would be a third of the forces they had positioned around Ukraine.  Individual soldiers were not told that they were going in to invade Ukraine, only that they were "on an exercise". Belarus says it may send its forces to help Russia.
