Can Gov. Youngkin save VA electric ratepayers from green energy madness? | Eastern North Carolina Now

first step accomplished by executive order, but legislation needed now

ENCNow

In his campaign, Governor Youngkin of Virginia addressed the major drawbacks of so-called "green energy", wind and solar, namely their high cost and their unreliability leading to blackouts and rationing.  He started to put his vision of cheap and reliable power for Virginia's electric customers into action with his Executive Order #9 that withdrew Virginia from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative whose carbon fees would have raised electric rates.  Virginia's major electric monopoly responded by cancelling a scheduled rate increase to customers that had been designed to pay those fees.

That is the easy part.  To really save Virginians from the Democrats ''green energy'' madness, however, he will need to marshal the votes in the legislature to repeal the Democrats 2020 so-called "Virginia Clean Economy Act" which demands that all electricity be from fickle and expensive wind and solar by 2045.  That legislation even requires a large part of that to come from the most expensive of all forms of wind energy, offshore wind.  That would vastly increase electric bills and lead to a huge vulnerability of their electric supply to hurricanes.

Youngkin has a Republican majority in the State House but faces a 1-vote Democrat majority in the State Senate.  On masks for school children,, he found one level headed Democrat to help get his legislation through, so hopefully he can do so on this issue as well.

North Carolina faces the same problem with "Republican leaders" in the General Assembly enacting Biden's failing energy policies in HB951 while rejecting the successful Trump energy policies.  Republicans did this to us in North Carolina, unlike Virginia, where the Democrats did.

We need to start getting some real Republicans who represent our base instead of the special interests. The legislature has way too many go-fers for the special interests who ignore the people back home. We have a good state House member but redistricting has put us in a Senate district with one of the worst of the special interest "Republican" spear-carriers, Jim Perry of Kinston in the Senate. Hopefully, conservatives in Craven County have come up with a primary opponent for him.
