A, 83-year-old man previously convicted of murder who was out on parole has been arrested and charged with killing a woman in Brooklyn and dismembering her body.

Harvey Marcelin, 83, allegedly murdered 68-year-old Susan Leyden, severing her head and limbs, leaving her body in a garbage bag in a shopping cart that was discovered on a busy Brooklyn street, NBC New York reported.

"Last week, my office charged Harvey Marcelin with allegedly concealing the severed head of a woman in her home and discarding the victim's torso in a bag on the street," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement on Thursday. "Today, the grand jury indicted Harvey Marcelin for murder, and my office is committed to vigorously seeking justice. The facts of this horrific case are gruesome and unsettling and my heart is with the victim's family and friends."

Marcelin was arrested the day after the body was discovered, and charged with one count of concealment of a human corpse.

"The cause and manner of death are pending further study," the chief medical examiner's office told NBC News.

The police are investigating whether a severed leg found in a bag in Cypress Hills belonged to the murdered woman, NBC New York reported.

The leg was discovered around 3:30 p.m. on Monday while responding to a call on Jamaica Avenue, the outlet reported. The leg was discovered on March 8, the torso - missing the head, arms, and legs - was discovered five days earlier on March 3.

"Law enforcement sources say a person walking by the intersection of Pennsylvania and Atlantic avenues around 1:45 a.m. made the discovery near a pawn shop and other small businesses, and called 911," NBC New York reported.

The New York Times reported that Marcelin now identifies as a woman and proceeded to use feminine pronouns. It is unclear when Marcelin began identifying as a woman. In the past, Marcelin had admitted to having "problems" with women.

WABC reported that police "released video of a person they say is Harvey Marcelin riding a motorized scooter and sitting on a human leg in a 99 cent store in Queens." The outlet also noted that police executed a search warrant at Marcelin's apartment and discovered a human head and an electric saw.

Marcelin and Leyden reportedly knew each other for at least two years, but the exact nature of the relationship is still unclear.

"We are still looking into the motive, but based on her history, she's capable of a lot of evil things out there," NYPD Chief John Chell told the outlet.

NBC reported that Marcelin has a history of killing past girlfriends:

In 1963, Harvey Marcelin was sentenced to 20 years to life for a murder conviction, court documents show. He was paroled in 1984.

Court documents show Marcelin returned to prison in 1986 to serve a six- to 12-year sentence on a separate manslaughter conviction.

Marcelin became eligible for parole in 1991, which he was first granted in 2019.
