J.D. Vance has won the Republican Party nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, according to results released on Tuesday night.

Vance, backed by venture capitalist Peter Thiel and endorsed by former President Donald Trump, will face Democrat Tim Ryan in the general election this fall.

The race was first called by Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report and Insider/Decision Desk HQ. Politico, the Associated Press, The New York Times, and NBC News all called the race for Vance a short time later.

With more than 60% of the votes counted, Vance leads Josh Mandel, who was backed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), 31.6% to 24.6%.

Jane Timken, who is currently in fifth place, released a statement late Tuesday evening saying that she had spoken with Vance and "congratulated him on his victory."

Donald Trump Jr. responded quickly to the news of Vance's victory with a congratulatory tweet, saying that tens of millions of dollars from establishment Republicans was not enough to stop Vance from winning.
