Government workforce grew by 57,000 in May | Eastern NC Now

The number of people working for government in the United States increased by 57,000 in May, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In April, according to BLS, 22,207,000 people were employed by government in this country. In May, that grew to 22,264,000.

 
 
 

The biggest increase came at the state government level, where employees grew from 5,224,000 in April to 5,260,000 in May—an increase of 36,000.

The second biggest increase came at the local level, where government employees grew from 14,108,000 in April to 14,124,000 in May—an increase of 16,000.

At the federal level, government employment grew from 2,875,000 in April to 2,880,000 in May—an increase of 5,000.
