Researchers in China said that they might have discovered signs of alien civilization using a state-of-the-art telescope, according to a report in a government-run science journal.

Using the "Sky Eye," a large radio telescope, researchers found unique narrow-band electromagnetic signals some believe could be from "extraterrestrial civilizations."

The report, published in Science and Technology Daily, said "several cases of possible technological traces and extraterrestrial civilizations from outside the earth" were detected by researchers at Beijing Normal University, according to USA Today.

Sometime after publication, the report appears to have been deleted from Science and Technology Daily's website, Bloomberg reported. However, before it was seemingly scrubbed, other Chinese news outlets had amplified the report, making it a popular topic on Weibo, a Chinese social media site.

The report said researchers had detected several signals deemed unusual after beginning a mission to find extraterrestrial life in September 2020. One of the unique signals came from planets that are not in the solar system.

Alternatively, the chief scientist on the project, Zhang Tongjie, said that possible radio interference could explain the signals.

"The possibility that the suspicious signal is some kind of radio interference is also very high, and it needs to be further confirmed or ruled out. This may be a long process," he said.

Dan Werthimer, a scientist who has researched the possibility of extraterrestrial life, told Inside Outer Space that researchers at Sky Eye were dealing with radio interference, not signals emanating from an alien civilization.

"All of the signals detected by SETI researchers so far are made by our own civilization, not another civilization," he told the outlet. "It's getting hard to do SETI observations from the surface of our planet. Radio pollution is getting worse, as more and more transmitters and satellites are built. Some radio bands have become impossible to use for SETI."

Werthimer also said that to truly conduct a proper search for extraterrestrial life, a radio telescope might need to be placed on the moon, distancing it from radio pollution on earth.

Governments around the world appear to be looking into the possibility of alien life, as well as UFOs, with the Department of Defense announcing in May the creation of the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG) task force to investigate UFOs.
