Italian government falls, conservative lead in polls for new election | Eastern NC Now

major parties declined to back Draghi

ENCNow

Italy will be going to the polls soon to elect a new government to replace the failed caretaker government under Mario Draghi.  The vote could be as early as September 10 and conservative parties lead in the polls.  Several major parties abstained on a critical confidence vote, including Matteo Salvini's populist nationalist anti-immigration League, former prime minister Silvio  Berlusconi's traditional conservative Forza Italia, and the Five Star Movement, a populist party whose ideology is a mish-mash of right and left.  The ultra-conservative Brothers of Italy, which has refused to participate in the caretaker government, voted that it had no confidence in Draghi.

In the polls, the Brothers of Italy led by former cabinet minister Senator Giorgia Meloni, are in first place followed by the center-left Democrat Party, with the League close behind them.  The three party conservative alliance of the Brothers of Italy, the League, and Forza Italia are poised to win a clear majority.
