Mrs. Mary Louise Brown Hopkins, “Sugar Pig,” age 86, a resident of Washington, NC transitioned to her heavenly home on Friday, September 2, 2022, at her home surrounded by family and friends.

    Mrs. Mary Louise Brown Hopkins, "Sugar Pig," age 86, a resident of Washington, NC transitioned to her heavenly home on Friday, September 2, 2022, at her home surrounded by family and friends.

    Mrs. Hopkins was born in Beaufort County on August 9, 1936. She was the daughter of the late John R. Brown and Myrtle Tetterton Brown. Mrs. Hopkins attended Old Ford school and graduated from Washington High School in 1954. On March 6, 1960, she married the love of her life, Bennie Ray Hopkins, who preceded her in death on November 7, 1980. Mrs. Hopkins is survived by her daughter, Mary Susan Hopkins Williams, granddaughter, Morgan W. Cutler (husband Dave Cutler), grandson, Parker B. Williams, and the sparkle of her eye, great granddaughter, Caroline G. Cutler. Mrs. Hopkins is also survived by her special nephew, Ronnie L. Brown.

    In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hopkins was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda B. Melvin, Edna B. Toler, and three brothers James "Tommy" Brown, Samuel Brown and Robert Brown and two special nephews Timothy L. Brown and James "Geary" Brown.

    Mrs. Hopkins retired from the Department of Social Services in 1997. She was a member of Old Ford Church of Christ and the Old Ford Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary where she served as secretary, and a member of the Beaufort County Grange. Mrs. Hopkins was known for her left-handed pitching, her delicious seven-layer chocolate cake, and spicy cheese straws. If you knew Mary Louise, "Sugar Pig," you know she always had a special joke or song for any occasion.

    The family would like to thank all caregivers and special friends for their love, dedication, and visits.

    Services will be conducted by Paul Funeral Home & Crematory on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at Old Ford Church of Christ, 6040 US Hwy. 17 North, Washington. Family will receive visitors at 1:00 pm, services will begin at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Services will be conducted by Reggie Braziel and Eddie Bowen.

    The following will serve as pallbearers: Herman Grissom, Tucker Jackson, Sammy Johnson, Cole Brame, Tanner Coltrain, Ryan Hardison and Logan Langley.
