Czech local elections show major shift to the right | Eastern NC Now

follows trend of Sweden and Italy

ENCNow

Local elections in the Czech Republic held last weekend showed the same major swing to the right as the parliamentary elections in Italy and Sweden.   The populist / nationalist right ANO party of former prime minister Babis, who was nicknamed the "Czech Trump", which narrowly lost the last parliamentary election to the traditional conservative Civic Democrats, made major gains, as did the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party, another right wing populist party that calls for a referendum on leaving the EU and for banning Islam in the country.  ANO won a majority on the city councils of 8 of the 13 regional capitals. Freedom and Direct Democracy tripled their number of city and town councillors to over 600.

Heavy losses were suffered by the Social Democrats, a partner in the national governing coalition, and by the Communists.  The Civic Democrats also saw their numbers of local officeholders fall, but to a lesser degree.
