Ukraine makes major breakrhtough in south on Kherson front | Eastern North Carolina Now | while advance continues in north

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Pro-Russian military bloggers are admitting that Ukrainian troops scored a "major breakthough" of Russian lines in the south on the Kherson front. Ukrainian troops have advanced 20 miles into formerly Russian occupied territory.  Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces are continuing their advance in the north, recapturing several towns and the strategically important city of Lyman.

Russia has 30,000 of its best troops pinned down on the west side of the Dnipro River.  The Ukrainians have destroyed all three bridges across the river, making supply, retreat, or reinforcement extremely difficult.  Pontoon bridges are detected by drone and quickly taken out by long range artillery.

Russian forces are faced with very low morale, and even some pro-Putin sources have expressed concern of a military mutiny as happened in Czarist Russia in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War and again during the First World War.

The city of Kherson is the main target of Ukraine's southern counterattack. It is a place I drove through a bit over a decade ago on the way to a vacation in Crimea. From the map, it looks like Ukraine's forces are a bit over halfway to Kherson from the point where they started down the main highway. On that trip, I also drove down that highway and over one of those three bridges over the Dnipro River that the Ukrainians have destroyed.
