Conservative vs. establishment Senate primary shaping up in WV | Eastern NC Now
for Manchin's seat in 2024
One of the top Republican pickup opportunities in the US Senate for 2024 is seeing a primary between conservatives and the establishment taking shape. Democrat incumbent Senator Joe Manchin is in serious political trouble in West Virginia and the primary battle to chose his opponent and likely successor is already shaping up.
Staunch conservative Congressman Alex Mooney has already announced for the Senate and begun campaigning. He has been endorsed by the conservative Club for Growth, which has pledged $10 million to his primary campaign. He is also expected to be endorsed by the other major national conservative PAC, the Senate Conservatives Fund.
On the establishment side, Governor Jim Justice is widely expected to run and be backed by the DC swamp's Mitch McConnell and his PAC. Justice was originally elected as a Democrat and switched to Republican while serving as governor. His positions on issues have been rather wishy-washy, like McConnell.
