new poll: trad. right and populist right in #1 and #2 positions with German voters | Eastern NC Now

each one leads governing Social Democrats

ENCNow

A recent poll of German voters by the respected British polling firm YouGov has put right of center parties in both the first and second place with German voters, both leading the governing Social Democrats.  The traditional center-right Christian Democrats (CDU), together with its more staunchly conservative Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) is the country's leading party.  In second place is the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Alternativ fur Deutschland (AfD).

In all of the states of the former East Germany, the AfD is the top party, while the reverse is true in western states.

The CDU / CSU would receive 31% of the vote if the election were held today, and the AfD 17%.  The conservative Free Voters would receive 2%.  The governing Social Democrats would receive 16%, as would their far left coalition partners, the Greens.  The (far) Left Party would receive 6%

The traditionally right of center Free Democrats, who have badly stubbed their toe by joining the unpopular Social Democrat coalition, and have been bleeding votes in state elections ever since, are on the knife edge of being eliminated from parliament, as they are hovering at 5%.  If they fall even one vote short of 5% they will not be eligible for any parliamentary seats.

In the recent state election in the longtime Social Democrat stronghold of Berlin, the CDU emerged as the top party, with the AfD also advancing.  The state now has its first CDU-led government in decades.
