Greek conservative win parliamentary election, campaigning against illegal immigration | Eastern North Carolina Now

Greece's incumbent conservative New Democracy Party, running on a platform that stressed stopping illegal immigration, won the Greek parliamentary election with an increased vote share, while its main rival, the leftist Syriza saw its vote share drop by over 10 percentage points.  New Democracy was the leading party in all but one of Greece's electoral districts.  This is the first time since the fall of the military dictatorship that an incumbnet party has won an election in Greece.

New Democracy outperformed the polls by wining 40.9% of the vote.  Coming in second, Syriza took 20.1%.  New Democracy will not have enough seats to govern alone, but if it is unable to put together a coalition, it can call a second election, in which as leading party, it would be awaarded an extra 50 bonus seats giving it a solid majority by itself.  Another party of the right the new ultra conservative National Patriotic Movement - Victory narrowly missed winning seats, winning 2.92%, just below the 3% threshold needed to qualify for seats in parliament.

Two "Green" parties received less than 1% of the vote, as did attempts to revive the neo-fascist Golden Dawn Party which won seats in two past elections.

New Democracy won 146 seats in the 300 seat parliament.  Its most logical coalition partner would be the populist / nationalist anti-immigration Greek Solution Party, which won 16 seats, a gain of 6.  The Greek Solution Party takes an even harder line against illegal immigration, advocating electrification of the border fence with Turkey and sending illegal aliens who enter the country to an uninhabited island until they could be deported.

Howver a new election with similar results would give New Democracy an absolute majority of about 195 seats in what would then be a 350 seat parliament.
