Russia blows up major dam in Ukraine, causing massive flooding | Eastern NC Now

UPDATE: Russia is now also blowing up smaller dams on smaller rivers in occupied parts of Ukraine to create water obstacles for Ukraine's expected counter-offensive.

Russians have blown up the most important dam on the Dnipro River, the Kakhovka Dam, which holds back what is by far the largest resovoir in Ukraine, sending large volumes of water downstream, causing major flooding.  The lower water level may interfere with proper cooling at Europe's largest nuclear power station and cause a nuclear emergency there.

Explosives planted inside the turbine room of the hydroelectric power station on the dam totally destroyed it, and other explosives also took out another section of the dam which widened as water poured through it.  Russia had mined the dam some months ago and has been sending large volumes of water down a canal to Crimea to store it for weeks.  The impact of the flooding will  make it almost impossible for Ukraine to mount an offensive south of the dam, allowing Russia to move troops to strengthen their lines north of the dam against the expected Ukrainian counter-offensive.
