New poll predicts big gains for populist right in EU parliament election 2024 | Eastern NC Now

while Greens collapse

ENCNow

A new poll conducted by Politico for the 2024 EU parliamentary elections shows a continung decline of the center, big gains for the populist / nationalist right, and a collapse of the Greens.   The Greens are set to lose at least half of their seats, following massive electric rates hikes from their EU Green Deal.

The poll also predicts that the only likely stable majority coalition that can be formed in the EU parliament is one between the traditional conservative European Peoples Party (EPP) coalition of national traditional conservative parties, and the main populist right coalition of national parties, the ECR (European Conservatives and Reformists).  EPP and ECR are likely to obtain a majority even without the Identity and Democracy (ID Group), a more stridently populist and naitonalist spinoff of ECR.  EPP is projected to emerge as the largest party grouping in parliament even with modest losses, while ECR is set for major gains and ID for more modest gains.

The current majority coaliton is a grand coalition between the EPP and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), but both are projected to lose seats and that majority will no longer be possible.  Indeed, the Politico poll indicates that the EPP / ECR coalition may be the only viable majority coalitiion in the new parliament.
